    ...for conservative causes may backfire in Ireland.  

    Relationships between people in Ireland and Irish-Americans can be less than friendly when people perceive political interference.  It won't help that the widely despised Ian Paisley has been generously supported by the U.S. religious right.

      Will funding for "pro-life" be perceived as similar to funding Ian Paisley?

        Evangelical Protestantism doesn't have a great reputation in Ireland, as negative views from areas in the Northeastern U.S. tend to travel across.   Its excesses and foibles are also fodder for tabloids (under common ownership in Ireland and Britain) and TV news.
