    And I get that these politicians do understand things like that, but that doesn't mean that it isn't a little bit disingenuous to claim that Nelson is almost certain to retire from the Senate while simultaneously saying that there wouldn't be any reason to worry about him only running for one term.

    I think a lot of people here don't understand how much these are personal decisions on the parts of politicians, it's one thing to say "for the good of the party" or that there's "something important at stake" but it's surprisingly easy to also say "well, I've earned a rest, let someone else do it" (especially given that the ones who are so sure that he's going to retire seem to be assuming it based on his age).

      My sense is he would know he's making an eight year commitment if he ran unless something happened beyond his control.  Usually governors run for two terms unless they become unelectable.  But yeah, he could hang it up at the age of 75 for personal reasons, health reasons, or a variety of other reasons.
