One of the unifying threads of modern American style conservatism (and the austerity philosophy in Europe is an American export) is that economics is a morality play, and is part of a larger battle between good and evil.  Observed economic behaviors, of course, have no bearing on how this plays out.

In this world view, unemployment is high because western Europeans are spoiled children who demand their vacations, their national health insurance, and their retirements, and who are social liberals who favor things like gay marriage: they are thus being punished for their immorality.  The UK and the US, with their much weaker social welfare systems, are not being punished as severely because Reagan and Thatcher stood up to the hippies.  (The possibility that the UK and the US outperform the Eurozone because they have their own currencies and are not subject to the whims of socially conservative ECB chairs is not likely to register.)

To appreciate this, substitute "Dirty fucking hippies" for "French" in the discourse of European austerians and you get a screed that could have come from any Republican in America.
