    many are more expert at rationalization than they are at rational thought.  The skill with which they could finding justification for often arbitrary or capricious decisions and actions was often breathtaking.

      Within my field, I'd say that was only true for a very few, all of whom were not respected by the rest of us (and knew it).  Many were doing research on topics with lucrative applications, so there were abundant temptations.

      One of the current problems with the independence of academia is that budgets have been cut so severely, especially at public universities, that the administration is looking for any and every way to generate extra mural funding.  This is a corrupting influence on everyone.
