    an African-American woman serving TWENTY YEARS for firing a warning shot in front of her abusive partner - which is much closer to a manslaughter sentence.  I guess daring to try to defend yourself is a crime in some circles.

      a warning shot rather than shooting him dead (and possibly then planting a knife in his hand).

      Not under our legal system. You don't fire warning shots, you don't shoot to injure. Once you pull the gun out, you'd better kill the attacker, because otherwise you're looking at a lawsuit (at minimum) and probably criminal charges.
