  •  Had a wonderful slow rain yesterday that lasted (5+ / 0-)

off and on for about 12 hours or so. Sorry for those dealing with flood waters right now but the rain is welcome up here on the ridge tops. I suspect we are getting up near normal soil moisture conditions around here now after last summers drought. Big relief to me as I've been worried that if we had a dry spring we'd be in even worse trouble this coming summer. But at least we'll be starting out in good shape this year. Now that the trees are leafing out it is easier to see the damage caused by last summers weather. We lost more trees than I had  thought we had. The forest isn't devastated or anything like that but there are definitely more dead trees out there than there were. Of course that isn't all bad either, dead trees add much to the forest ecology and have a role to play as well as the living ones.
Four male Baltimore Orioles here yesterday and three male and one female Rose breasted grossbeak, adding lots of color to the feeders. Unfortunately the rain and cloudy conditions made photography challenging but did get a few pics that I think I can edit into something useful.
But  the really big news from my back porch is that we had our first ever Red Headed Woodpecker at the feeders yesterday. Awesome! They've gotten very scarce the last ten years or so and have only rarely seen them here in the yard and never at the feeders so we are pretty excited to see this one.  We are keeping our fingers crossed that he isn't just passing through and will become a regular here.
