...conflate presentation of information with education.

This isn't just a higher education problem. It invades all of education from pre-K on upward.

I'm certain that there is excellent content in these online offerings, but it matters little if there isn't some human who recognizes the look of puzzlement on a student's face (or several students' faces) and actively and effectively intervenes.

Those of us who advocate for broadly based, quality education for all at any stage need to always remember that the Elites know what quality education really entails, and they don't believe most of us "deserve it."

    •  I think you haven't taken such a course (0+ / 0-)

They involve far more than "presentation of information." There are collaborations among students, interactive questioning, and even inquiry. I have been involved with improving online education for a decade and know the high quality that can be embedded in today's complex learning platforms--a lot better than what you get in most classrooms, because the traditional teachers won't give up their overhead projectors.

I would only for projecting from websites to have the whole class see something

btw -  what I saw from too many is that powerpoints were used as a slightly fancier version of overheads

      •  You're right. I haven't (0+ / 0-)

My daughter has, and right or wrong her experience with (I suspect) a relatively inferior version of what you probably would produce and/or execute is probably the norm for far too many current "consumers" of online education.
