  •  My family left Cuba 7 weeks before I was born, (9+ / 0-)

does that count?  Then we left Miami for Puerto Rico when I was 3 months old - between feeding me and taking care of my 6 older siblings we missed the flight.  I don't remember that one either.

First flight I remember is when I was 7 and we flew to Miami to spend X-mas (and my birthday) with our many relatives there (most common phrase back then: "this is the year Castro goes down and we get Cuba back"). It was pretty crazy - my parents and all 9 of us (two more born in PR) ranging in age from 1 to 18. I am pretty sure it was a DC-8 but it could have been a 727.  I loved being on the airplane (unlike now that, although I am not afraid of flying, I don't enjoy spending time on an airplane and can't wait to get where I'm going).

Scariest flight: going from Miami to Buenos Aires on business and just after takeoff the pilot tells us we're going back because the hydraulic systems have failed. The next 20 minutes until we landed were the longest of my life (in a previous career I had modeled what happened to aircraft when engines or other systems fail and I knew it wasn't pretty).

Then they came for me - and by that time there was nobody left to speak up.
