segment on Kent state shootings in Abby Martin's show "Breaking the set". Wondering why things are different today than then - seems students were more radical/activist then. I think debt is one of the "valuable" instruments for the ruling class to keep the proles down. Is it true in this case? Didn't students have debt in the 60's/early 70's? When did the student loan industrial complex take shape? Iam sure there are other factors which account for the difference but debt has been in my mind a lot these days. Thoughts?

I am also appalled that we are not out on the streets collectively protesting against sequestration/SS/Medicare cuts. Imagine if this was in France - seniors will be out in droves on the street and the students will be out in solidarity. Guess we are the most brainwashed people on earth.

i'm working on the assumption that one of the key reasons that students are not as radical today is that the economy is very different now than in the 60's/70's.  students key concerns now revolve around being able to support themselves and meet their existential needs.  back in the 60's/70's jobs were plentiful and the economy, the environment and social support systems were not teetering on the brink of collapse.  getting drafted and shipped off to kill and be killed in behalf of the corporate state was the existential threat then.   being cast out to scrape by on the fringes of society is the new existential threat.

i too am appalled that people are not out in the streets protesting, but the brutal attacks on protesters by the president's thugs have probably worked to tamp down the desire for that.  perhaps we will find some other means to fight back that does not leave people at risk of bodily damage.
