And the reason the husband is jealous is because his wife started showing, and he suspects it's not his. So she drinks bitter water, he donates a few pounds of barley flour to the local temple, and five or six months later she has the baby.

He knows it's his. The priest and GOD say so. Her faith might be shaken a bit if she was screwing around while he was off in the hills herding sheep, but she'd never say so. If he even thought about acting jealous over the baby, the entire community would be there to remind him that his wife endured the faithfulness ritual and came through golden.

The downside, of course, is that it doesn't work, but she miscarries anyway. Then she's tarred with the crime of adultery (whether guilty or not), her husband probably divorces her and sends her back to papa sans dowry, and she has lost any prospects for a decent family life.

The text implies that it's not the bitter water, but the curse that does the business. Otherwise they could just sell temple floor scrapings in the market for those interested in family planning. So how is this religion different from witchcraft (and black witchcraft, to boot) again?

there is.  The rest is mumbo jumbo.

Of all the preposterous assumptions of humanity over humanity, nothing exceeds most of the criticisms made on the habits of the poor by the well-housed, well-warmed, and well-fed. --Herman Melville
