  •  Asheville is a special place (8+ / 0-)

It makes me sick to read how the legislature is doing its best to impoverish the City of Asheville by stealing its water system.  What galls me even more is that the bill to steal the water system now has exceptions to a couple of big city systems so that their systems cannot be taken in the same way.

For the life of me, I do not understand how this is not an illegal taking since no compensation is being given to the City of Asheville for its investment of tax payer dollars into the water system.

I am amazed that there is no concept of home rule to protect local govts. and their taxpayers from theft by the state legislature.  Dave thanks for writing about this issue before.

    •  Oh, and BTW (8+ / 0-)

I fully intend to be there for the next meetup in July.  And I will be heavily armed with sunscreen and a hat too.  My nose still glows like Rudolph due to lack of preparation stupidity on my part.

Hey gg! Hope your day is a nice one. Stay dry! Looks like a lot of rain heading your way. Our friend and Kossack, Asheville's Gordon Smith, writes on this often at Scrutiny Hooligans.

Here is his latest, insightful piece from Tuesday.

There is an old saying that local government is the cornerstone of democracy.  What they are doing in Raleigh is the exact opposite.  My mostly apolitical husband commented that the Republican legislature is acting like socialists (in the pejorative sense) instead of those who are opposed to big govt.

As I posted on davehouck's diary on this issue, these actions by the legislature actually serve to make local govts think twice before investing in infrastructure.

    •  Thank you; and yes, Asheville is a special place (6+ / 0-)

In a meeting last night, I made the point that the people that come to Asheville do so in part because they want to change their way of living, and they want to live in a community that supports those changes.  They want to make changes in their lives that reduce their footprints upon our Earth.  They want to live more sustainably, they want to purchase organic foods, they want solar panels on their roofs, they want cars that are moving away from internal combustion fossil-fuel burning engines.  They value living closer to the Earth, being able to walk in quiet forests, sitting by a creek, or upon a high bald gazing into pristine valleys and coves.  They feel a connectedness with our Earth, and that connectedness fosters a desire to do what they can to lessen their impact upon it, and to preserve it for future generations.

But there are of course many in our state, and in our country, who resist change, who fear change, who fear that which might disrupt the false sense of security that their tight hold on what they choose to believe about their lives provides for them.

And now they have the opportunity to fight back against change, to punish those that disrupt their perception of how the world should be.

Asheville is a natural target for them.

Why is it so hard for people to see this?

What this appears to be is a punative measure against the City of Asheville, the charge of which is being led by Buncombe County and Henderson County state legislators.  It is sad that petty political feelings are being used to try to destroy a great place.

But then, when haven't Republicans acted petty, regardless of the level of govt. in which they operate?

Asheville being such a bastion of progressivism that sticks in the craw of the legislature...? If this keeps up, North Carolina is going to start resembling Tennessee. Believe me, you good folks don't want that!

    •  I shutter to think what this will do to the.... (0+ / 0-)

established brewery industry here in Asheville.

Will we still be able to claim "Beer City USA" in the near future?  Asheville is all about tourism, and that has over the past few years, helped the city get publicity, and more dollars spent here.
