    School administrators, sadly, do not understand metaphors.

      Open education was both literal and figurative. It was a philosophy, a set of teaching practices, and an architectural movement. Open schools featured huge open areas with no walls. Teachers hated it. So they used bookshelves and portable   blackboards to create walls.
