On March 9, 1945 the Japanese -- in anticipation of their defeat -- staged a coup to force the French out of Vietnam to maintain full control of their WWII colony.   The French immediately turned to the US for help to fight the Japanese and reassert French control of Vietnam.

With the US decision to support the French in March 1945, America never said no to any French request for financial aid.  This set up the events of 1954 after Ho Chi Minh defeated the French.  It led to the US escalation of the War in Vietnam in 1961, 1963, 1965, 1968.

Most people don't know that the US involvement in Vietnam lasted from 1945-1975.  It was a series of fateful decisions that led to the US disaster.

worked with Ho Chi Minh against the Japanese spoke at our JFKSWCS graduation. He spoke of that as a great betrayal and that Stalin was only too happy to pull up the slack if the nationalist became a stalinist in order to gain support for independence.

Sounded like another cold war fuck up on the political scale of Mossedeque in Iran - a whole bloody history could have been avoided with just a little foresight
