  •  This is the perfect place for pootie (18+ / 0-)

My personal opinion is that he lost himself in the comfort of someone else being there and was mentally transported back to kittenhood and then had a panic attack and reacted. I am no expert, though.

That he'd consciously decided I was OK but hadn't realized it at gut level, so he was willing to fall asleep next to me but had an instinctive reaction when he woke up.

Is there anything I should do besides playing with him frequently and continuing to be unobtrusively friendly?

      •  Personally, I wouldn't push too much. (0+ / 0-)

It depends on how spooked he gets. The cat I had before Jenny, which was Ashley, was good up to a certain point, however she had been chased by dogs in her former home and was very skittish. She ran away when we had our bed replaced. She freaked completely out and disappeared out the door not to be seen or heard from again by me. Jenny is basically a love bug; she had been basically feral when she was found by her previous human and when that human died, she freaked out and was on her own for about a year. She is very much a lovebug and loves being held; however she will not lay down for a nap WITH me as of yet. Am not sure how much of that is related to her being on her own and feral.

I am hoping that he is able to mellow completely out; however it might not happen. Just be aware and know that if he calms down too much, his subconscious brain might take over again. No matter what, love him and make sure that he knows that he has that unconditional love and support that he needs and eventually he should come around. The fact that he is spending the time with you and relaxed enough around you to go to sleep says a lot.

or his proximity alarm went off in deep sleep and forgot you were you.

I'd keep on as you are, sounds like you're doing great. :-)
