  •  Here in the City... (5+ / 0-)

...dumpster diving and sidewalk scavenging can be very productive. But it takes a vehicle to do it right. I used to go out in the wee hours with a friend who had a truck. We'd prowl the upscale neighborhoods early on trash day when all kinds of things would be discarded curbside, including things like antique gilt picture frames. I found a matched pair of Victorian oil lamps that way. :-)

    •  I have a gorgeous (5+ / 0-)

antique rocker (needs a bit of rehab) that matches a huge mirror I inherited.  I forget the name of the style -- from the 1800s.  My friend picked the rocker up from along side the road -- out there for the bulky waste pick up.  Amazing.

He also picked up a practically unused Cuisinart food processor and gave it to me.  I figured out why it was trashed -- it is complicated to use and rich people like expensive gifts that are simple to operate.  Once I figured the damned thing out (and still, curses to Cuisinart engineers) it works brilliantly.  It was priced at $250.

That area doesn't do bulky waste pick up anymore so trolling the neighborhood is a thing of the past.
