    It excludes places where people are more likely to buy at local bookstores (locally owned or chain), AND places where people use libraries.

    In other words, it probably excludes some of the best places to be a reader, and therefore potentially where populations of the most avid readers live.  (If you learned a place bought a lot of books on Amazon, what would you infer about the state of their bookstores and libraries?)

    It's also possible that library users, as a population skew differently than book buyers.  (My guess would be be poorer, overall, with age differences as well.)

    If you assessed my reading by how many books I've ordered from Amazon, ever, you could conclude I was functionally illiterate.
