  •  My Often Repeated Phrasing is That Denialism (7+ / 0-)

is identical whether it's denialism of the phenomenon or denialism of remedies.

But I disagree that progressives should centerpiece this issue because it is impossible for our system to assemble the power to address it to the degree necessary in the time frame science says is required. It took 45 years for the rightwing to take over the country with the backing of scores of billionaires. For a scientifically responsible movement to do it with the backing of one and only one of the planet's billionaires could take half to 2/3 of a century.

If the US is to respond as needed in time, it must be accomplished through some other means than government. Our government is built from the ground up to hamstring the power and authority required.

we had some charismatic political leaders, in positions of great power, who could repeatedly address the public, and make it a fundamental part of the political conversation. imagine if they framed every major issue and every major decision and every major political debate in terms of its impact on climate.

corporate sponsored public policy and get back to self governance. The only impediment to movement on this issue is big corporate. They, alone, stand in the way of saving the Earth, as they do on so many dire issues for humanity.

That's a great front in the war on corporate (which I think is pretty much the only apt war metaphor from the Left, btw...), and mother Earth could be a powerful ally.

    •  Agreed. Only a non-violent revolution could (0+ / 0-)

scale to mitigate the worst effects of Climate Change at this point. And even then there's doubt.

But you'd have to get all the deniers-in-practice in the middle behind that revolution in order for it to happen, and the middle is by definition too complacent and/or invested in the status quo to do so.

Frankly, I'd rather take down Exxon or Goldman Sachs, the way we're taking down RushBeckistan, than elect another "better" Democrat who's going to wind up singing for the bankster choir.
