Worse, a few years later she was chortling in her inimitable style that in essence they'd got away with it.  NOW she has regrets.  Still, from all I've read, Florida was stolen and almost certainly was gonna stay stolen whether by virtue of the Gore team's inadequate legal focus or the efforts of the Secretary of State (et al.) regardless what the S. Ct did.

As for what might've been, I can't begin to imagine Gore being treated much better by the fascists than Obama is being treated now.  Their claim to illegitimacy would have been much better grounded, and Gore probably would have been as susceptible to it.  In that context, the devastation that would have been wreaked by the rabid, nihilist right post 9/11 (awareness conceivably might have reduced the shock in some manner but not the event), would have destroyed the Democratic Party. The fascist blat machine and its minions would have pushed us to a new dark age.

O'Connor's legacy despite being the first of her gender is only that she is one of a legion of mediocrities.  That she might have regrets earns her nothing.
