I am an Army brat. I am a child of the 60s and 70s. I lived on Army posts during the Viet Nam War where we held our breath every day hoping it wouldn't be someone we knew and loved who would be the next casualty or POW.

I watched my dad finally be free of the horrors of WWII Kamikaze attacks and 2 tours in Viet Nam when Alzheimer's finally robbed him of all his memories, even the PTSD ones. From May 20, 1945 until 2009 he spent the last part of May dreading the anniversary. Finally in 2009 that memory was wiped out with the memory of the names of his family and all the other parts of his life. From 2009 to his death in 2011 he had a measure of peace from the ravages of war.

It is too trivial, too mundane to say that his suffering and the deaths of the men he served with was so we could have school desks.
