  •  Yeah, I don't think it's that easy (21+ / 0-)
I'm not homophobic. My only problem with gay men is that they aren't honest with themselves.
Bit of a broad brush there. What I admire about openly gay people is that they are truly honest with themselves.

If a man grows up in a macho society, all of his decisions are essentially made for him. Get a big truck, go hunting and fishing every weekend, drink a bunch of beer, watch football all day, screw as many women as possible, shower once a week. If the man doing this is straight, he has simply checked off all the boxes without thought. He doesn't have to worry much about who he is. He even does a few things on the macho list that are not his favorite just because his friends are doing them. His community doesn't think twice about his life decisions. He is safe.

Now if a gay man grows up in this and decides he wants to come out, he risks his place in his macho community. The risks are sometimes too much to bear. He could even lose his family. If someone wants to hold off a bit until they are more secure in their life, that ought to be okay. In an accepting society, it would be unnecessary but we are not there yet. It is more our problem, not theirs.
