  •  ...we have a moose antler coffee table... (8+ / 0-)

...three intertwined moose antlers make the "legs." The top is clear glass so you can see the moose antlers.

We have a lamp made out of deer antlers (the shade is a normal shade)...

    •  Very cool! (5+ / 0-)

In the late Spring around here, a dude in a pick-up truck parks in town with a sign that says "We buy antlers. $5.00/lb". Never saw that til I moved here. I find a fair amount of gnawed-on antlers. Turns out coyotes & foxes here chew them like a dog chews rawhide. They are looking to ingest the minerals in the antlers. Also, I saw porupine quills for sale here in town, for use in making Native American art. $24/oz. An ounce of quills is a lot--like half a lunch bag full. Lastly, I have a couple bobcat claws my wife bought from a taxidermist in MT back in the mid 90's. Awesome to hold. Someday I'll have them made into jewerly-once I figure out what I want. I've only had 20 years to think about it...

Buying an antler lamp is prohibitively expensive for me. They are waaay expensive. I see antler chandeliers advertised-those things are cool-but like 10's of 1000's of dollars!

      •  ...antlers are really hard to get for those... (5+ / 0-)

...that use them to make stuff. Guys like that who pay $5.00 per pound then put them in warehouses and sell them for $hundreds per pound.

Typically the travel through the Rocky Mountain states primarily. I know on guy that is very, very wealthy from doing this. He starts in New Mexico in spring then works his way up through the rest of the Rockies as the weather warms up.

He also has managed to get Boy Scout Troops to do his antler collecting too in various "ruralish" areas.

I'm telling you, this is a big time money making racket. Don't sell you antlers to folks like that for $5.00 a pound (like that will stop anyone from doing that)...

        •  ...and yes, antler lamps and antler table legs... (5+ / 0-)

...and esp. antler chandeliers can cost anywhere from several hundred dollars to 10's of thousands of dollars.

The artists often make the least in the grand cycle of antler art.

The guys who go around and collect the antlers make a killing while simultaneously drying up antler sources for others.

Then most artists sell antler are through dealers. The dealers normally make more than they give to the artists.

Artists actually are the "middle man" in this cycle AND make the least (unlike middle men in other things)...

          •  I'd never sell (5+ / 0-)

any of my antlers. Well, I suppose if the price got crazy high, I'd get greedy, but it would have to be astronomical.

On the other hand, I have, and will continue to give them away. If someone asks, and is going to make art with them-I'd give them up gladly. They're just in a waist-high pile right now. Knowing that they were going to have another life as art, that's an easy choice. But never to a company that was just going to resell them.

I think that slicing them into buttons is a cool thing. All the 80 y/o scandanavian sweaters I've seen have them. There is just something fundamentally cool about finding a natural item & repurposing it as buttons to me.
