  •  SCOTUS striking down DOMA won't equalize rights (0+ / 0-)

If the issue were just "diversity of thought" then government could just get out of the way and  and let "citizens and churches" work out their differences.

    No law, no problem.

That would work.  It would work fine. For the heteronormative Christian majority,  and the "others" they "tolerate."

But, where the 1300+ rights, benefits, protections and entitlements are concerned, "diversity of thought" is a BAD thing -- assuming one believes in Equal Protection of Laws.  And even with DOMA out of the way ... actually securing those rights, protections privileges ... and ESPECIALLY the "entitlements"  -- isn't going to quite as simple and effortless as we all like to assume.

And while Webster's Collegiate contains a nuance-free definition of "tolerance" that doesn't sound offensively passive or begrudging -- from the Minority POV, "tolerance" is what the Boy Scouts allowed to "Negroes" and Jews in the early 1950s.

It's a whole lot better than "hate."   And it's a little better than "bias".  But it's not actually "equality."

    •  Of course DOMA isn't the be-all/end-all... (0+ / 0-)

However, I would suggest that it is the biggest remaining single obstacle to getting those things done.

I wonder how many Federal statutes/regulations actually contain specific "a man and a women" languge...

The word "parent" is supposed to be a VERB, people...
