like in childhood. Also "Indian giver" to someone who takes
something back by giving it. And some other things.

It took me to my 20s to realize what I was saying and purge it from my vocabularly. Things engrained in childhood CAN be purged even by older people (my aunt who's 84 purged these from her vocabulary also) IF YOU TRY HARD ENOUGH.

I know this is provocative but I wonder if your mother thought it was important enough to change it, ie to try. IT takes effort many people might secretly resent the effort it requires when they "don't mean to be racist" anyway. My uncle was like that. And that's him not getting or caring how wrong it is...he did not care to exert the effort it takes, I think he thought no one who's (insert minority) hears. He didn't feel it was worth it. Which shows some degree of racism.

excellent book.  It is about all the wonderful things in our lives that originated with Native Americans...most of which no one realizes where the true origins lie.
