    I don't see enough of this observation: The bribery of Congress is done while they're in office, the payoff is after they leave. There is no money trail, and it's all legal. You think $5000 in campaign contributions is enough to buy a Congressman? Nope, it's the $250K (and more) salary after they leave office that buys them.  Or maybe it's the job for the spouse where the money gets laundered.

    I always wondered what the ex-pols were doing to earn their 6 and 7 figure salaries as lobbyists, and then I realized: they've already earned them. My favorite poster boy for this system is Rahm, from an article in 2008:

    Mr. Emanuel, who was chosen last month to become President-elect Barack Obama’s White House chief of staff, went on to make more than$18 million in just two-and-a-half years
    Well, were they hiring him for his financial expertise? Nope, he was calling in his chips, and the company was making an investment in the future as well. And all perfectly legal.
