Tell that to the little girl who lost her life in Kentucky because her five year old brother didn't realize there was a bullet in the gun that was given to him as a 'gift' and left in the corner.  Maybe we should have an IQ test for the parents.  A very sad day in Kentucky.

The parents should be held accountable for their negligence, but none of the proposed pieces of legislation do this.

Put another way, your argument just shows that we need more comprehensive gun safety legislation.  Unfortunately, given the unhinged opposition to any kind of legislation at all, we must proceed in baby steps.  It's far from ideal, but for the moment it's the only available option.

I don't disagree with you, but a background check would not have prevented this.

We should Pass laws that are needed and will work, not just to pass another needless law.

Discussion is GOOD, and if it is discussed long and seriously enough, then perhaps good legislation will come from that discussion.
