Military service on the resume is something that seems irresistable to brag about in a candidate, and objectively it's perfectly logical to think voters are drawn to that.  It has "Alpha" candidate written all over it.

And yet, the evidence is conclusive that voters do not give a shit.  They don't care about military service at all and give it zero credit in their voting decisions.

Until last year, we had four straight Presidential elections where the guy with a stronger military resume got beat by the guy with a weaker one.  Hell, Bush 41 was a genuine hero in WWII and Clinton was a Vietnam draft avoider, and he still won, and then Clinton beat another genuine WWII combat hero in Dole.  Gore had a stronger military resume than Dubya who like Clinton was a draft avoider, and of course Kerry was a decorated combat vet, and then McCain was a celebrated war hero and lost to Obama who was a lifelong civilian.

You see the same thing downballot, where voters just don't care.

Voters always conclude there is always something more important, far more important, than one guy's military service in deciding who to vote for.  And indeed, I'm not sure voters give military service any weight at all.

I think what we must realize is that most voters haven't served in the military, and therefore don't feel compelled to give weight to it in picking a candidate.
