  •  ok your nephew is at the right of the bell curve (19+ / 0-)

with respect to movies.  good for him.

MOST five year olds think the things in movies are real.

but this is not just about movies.  this is also about the difference between reality and fantasy when it is in the real world and not on a screen.

I am talking about five year olds who do not know that the actor in the big bird costume is not really Big Bird.  Not Big Bird on television, but when someone in the big bird costume comes up to them and shakes their hand and talks in the big bird voice.

I am talking about five year olds who have not fully grasped the permanence of death, which is most of them.

i am talking about kids whose impulse control is less well developed than the impulse control of teenagers.

i am talking about five year olds who do not realize that if you shoot someone with a real gun it is different than when you shoot someone with a toy gun.

but I do believe that many children have fantasy/reality issues. The thing with training children early mostly comes from families who hunt together. Big hunting camps on opening day, grandparents to kids. In those conditions teaching gun safety is important and usually passed down as tradition.
