I'm just saying that this story is so obviously a perfect example of stupid that it is difficult to think of much else to say.

The frightening thing is that there will be people who don't think it is an example of stupid - they will call it an accident and try to justify it in the "shit happens" category.

As for the other potential victims given this family's stupid, that too is sad and hopefully the parents who realize how stupid this scenario was won't let their kids play at their house.

My parents decided some of my friends' parents weren't responsible enough or had dangerous habits and I wasn't allowed to go to those people's houses.  Guns factored into at at least one of those decisions when I was really young.

I don't know if the kid who was showing off his Dad's gun when several of his buddies had come over to play who shot himself in the head in front of them and died had anything to do with my parents' intensity and vigilance on the gun issue, but I remember that incident.  Even though I was about five years old at the time, I understood that the parents were stupid to have left that gun in a place where that boy could get to it.

I also remember that his family was basically permanently broken after that gun incident.  I don't know that they ever gave up their guns, though.

Sometimes the authorities walk away from these things because there isn't anything more devastating to the family than the death - not even jail or whatever other societal punishment might be leveled against them.  Nothing we can do would make these people smarter, either.  They are still going to be stupid people regardless of societal response.
