    When growing up, I used to hear that phrase a lot, but for a good part of my ilfe that wasn't really true, or not nearly as true as during the gilded age.  

    During the FDR era, that major shift was epic, which people knew at the time, and which is even more starkly clear now.  

    Never was it more clear than when I watched some of the episodes of the Untold History of the United States by Oliver Stone and Peter Kuznick, and after watching the interviews with Kuznick on the Real News.   And it took the 1% many years to shift that back in their direction, and now, I think they feel like it can't be moved back this time, and so they hardly try to hide what they are doing (except of course, the huge deception hoisted upon the country by the Democrats).

    These interviews and the episodes about FDR and Wallace were game changers for me, in terms of understanding what happened.
