  •  I Loved Her So (11+ / 0-)

How I loved Laura Nyro. She was so singular, so unlike anyone else, her music so unique. You knew you were in the presence of greatness.

When I was 17, I drove from Southern California to Canada by myself. Windows open, highway pulsing, wind blowing through my hair, and Laura Nyro on 8-track playing the whole way through. I cranked up her music as loud as it would go -- Mercy On Broadway, Time and Love, Captain Saint Lucifer, Eli's Coming, Poverty Train.

Oh, word. Laura Nyro was the soundtrack of my life. I saw her play in a small club not long before she died. Even 30 years later, no longer a wild-eyed kid pointing my car toward the Canadian Rockies, I felt I was in the presence of God.

There was no one like her. RIP Laura Nyro.
