  •  Do I understand you correctly to say (0+ / 0-)

that you do not believe anything the Pope does or says should garner approval of any sort from us, regardless of what it may be?

And that your reasoning for this is that our approval will constitute positive reinforcement and thus encourage the Pope-followers to continue following him?

    •  No, but close. His followers shouldn't have (0+ / 0-)

following reinforced, and other things as well.

He doesn't give a shit what we think and say, so the reinforcement issue is moot, but I won't applaud his ability to now and then do or say the right thing for irrational reasons, because I don't applaud that even where, as in his case, my actions will have no impact either way..

      •  I'm afraid I can't follow your reasoning here. (0+ / 0-)

I mean, I can understand not wanting to applaud a right answer that's given for the wrong reasons.

But this still doesn't answer my question:  what is the drawback to us, or to the cause of aiding the needy, if the Pope speaks in favor of aiding the needy?

I can understand a reaction of "whatever, who cares" or of "this doesn't make me like you any better" -- but not of "go away and stop agreeing with us."

        •  I don't recall saying that there was a drawback (0+ / 0-)

to us, can you quote me? I do think that it is sad and sorry that he has a following and that they will follow whatever idiotic precept he puts out there, bu tht is a bit of a different issue.

as you said that in response to my original comment asking what the drawback is.

... and responded to my later comment about "what's wrong with having this guy say something we agree with" with a list of terrible things the Church has done.

            •  Not only the church, Rajneesh wasn't (0+ / 0-)

affiliated, it was examples of the kinds of stuff that following leaders can get you into.
