    My longest-term friend was a girl named Michelle I lived across the street from. She'd probably still be friendly with me, too, if we still lived close by. Her family changed a lot over the years and I always wondered if she was really happy, but she was always willing to reach out and be friends with anyone. I liked that about her.

    My closest friend from school growing up was a year or two younger, and I knew her through my father, a teacher in the school system. My dad would get to know the older teens in high school and ask them for babysitting when I was younger, so I met my closest friend's older sister that way. My younger friend Sandy was always thinking positive and looking out for the best in people. She died a few years ago. I still miss her.
