This is what keeps the folks who devised this "theater of the absurd" going.  GWB/et al do not believe in their heart of hearts they out and out lied.  Some of their sources clearly did, but let's move past that for a moment.

What they did was assess a mix of fact and fiction, not uncommon in momentous decisions, and make the determination that the risk was too great to not invade.  But after they were unable to gain worldwide consensus on the U.S. assessment, they decided to invade anyway.  In doing so, they accepted on behalf of America full responsibility for providing proof of the presence of WMD to the rest of the world.  "You break it, you own it" was exactly right, so the presence of WMD became required to justify the unilateral invasion (and convince the rest of the world to take shared ownership, warts and all).

We were either going to be heroes, or we were going to be goats - nothing in between.  It was in many ways a reckless decision.

This library is apparently the dressing up of a goat.

Because I have come to the realization that it won't resonate if it won't fit on a ribbon magnet:

Was he mistaken, or was he incompetent?
I don't see any clear alternatives. He was either mistaken in a stupendously blundering overreaction to a nonsensical threat, or he was in so far over his head he allowed others to tell him what to say and do because they wanted a war for reasons of their own.

Or, worse - the guy who, on the campaign trail as governor of Texas said:

I want to be a war time president so I can do everything I want and have a successful presidency
So I guess it's a choice between mistaken, incompetent, or social psychopath.

Try getting that on a bumper sticker.

We've been spelling it wrong all these years. It's actually: PRO-GOP-ANDA

      •  Only a mistaken, incompetent psychopath (0+ / 0-)

would make a decision from which, if he happened to be wrong, there would be no way out.  They blew off the consequences of not finding WMD.  That's why I'm convinced the accusation of lies will get nowhere with any of them.  If anything, it emboldens them.

I asked a Republican friend in the Summer of 2004, "Now that we know there were no WMD, the only chance to recover our reputation is if the GOP demands that GWB admit his mistake and not run for re-election.  It would at least be honorable and for the good of the country."

"No way that's going to happen", he said.

"But your party tried to impeach Bill Clinton for getting blow jobs".

"Yes, but he lied under oath".
