I, sfbob, confess that although I am a gay man, I once had a girlfriend. I even had sex with her. More than once. Then I came out of the closet. And at one point, being frustrated with my experiences in the dating world, I even proposed to her (she politely but firmly turned me down, telling me that it really wasn't what I wanted and that I knew it. She was right).

And then I dated a bunch more guys, with disappointing results. And then I had a relationship and then I had another one.

My point (and I do have one here) is that Kurtz appears to want Collins' entire dating resume as though that's supposed to prove something one way or the other about him as a person. We all make mistakes in relationships. Sometimes we choose the wrong person; sometimes people chose people of the gender they aren't attracted to in a vain attempt to conform. Hell, sometimes those relationships even turn out to be happy and successful ones. But why Kurtz thinks this aspect of Collins' past is worthy of some sort of special shaming really escapes me unless, of course, Kurtz simply doesn't like gay people and longs to find fault with anyone who comes out of the closet.

One of the many negative commenters to the original piece was that if Kurtz was dissatisfied with the content of the interview, his beef would be with the interviewer for failing to ask the questions Kurtz, in his august opinion, thought were important.

what kind of feelings did you have for your girlfriend? I think this is what so many people are having trouble understanding. They don't seem to understand that you can care deeply about someone who isn't the preferred gender. They think any such actions must be a calculated choice to deceive.

I had high school friends in a similar situation. Coming clean about who he was to himself and his girlfriend was very hard because he cared deeply about her and didn't want to hurt her.
