The UU church in Hobart, Indiana has a sliding pledge scale that is calculated on deductions after necessary expenses like food, shelter and child care.  If all of your income is tied up in meeting the necessities of life.  In your case, your income left to calculate the pledge would be near zero, and your contribution would be 1.5% of that.

The Mormons are infamous for requiring a tithe, but maintain a fairly extensive welfare network.  So it's quite possible that a Mormon family pays $35/week into the treasury from their unemployment check, yet gets the necessities of life that they lack from the church at a value that greatly exceeds $35/week.

    •  Not all congregations (0+ / 0-)

are the same. There is another one in my area that I still visit a few times a year, but I can't even play in their band because they practice during business hours and I kind of need my job.

I was more than willing to volunteer my time and talent, but they weren't receptive and no sliding scale was ever mentioned. Oh well, their loss.
