  •  That's approx. what I thought you'd say (21+ / 0-)

That's a brilliant strategy IF you want to be governed by Republicans.  Except for one little minor detail:  electing Republicans will guarantee that Social Security will be cut (and possibly privatized).  If that's what you want, then full steam ahead...

You're outright admitting that you'll be working against electing Democrats.  That's exactly the same as working for electing Republicans.

Have you ever heard the expression
"cutting off my nose to spite my face"??

    •  3rd rail, single issue, last straw (3+ / 0-)

Obama promises to cut my Social Security benefits.  It's in his budget.  I cannot get the Democrats representing me to say they will vote against this though they are weaseling away from the proposal a bit of late.  Not good enough.

I absolutely cannot support a party that will cut Social Security benefits and the best thing I can do is vote against the party in power and if I can keep throwing the bums out maybe eventually I'll run out of bums on the ballot.

It comes down to a choice between these two things:

        - a vote for the Democratic party that might, maybe institute a mild cut to Social Security

        OR

        - a vote for the Republican party that absolutely will cut Social Security in a major way and wants to privatize it (KILL IT) if they get enough votes.

Your plan will give Republicans the votes to cut/kill Social Security  Think it through.  You don't want to be kicking yourself someday as you eat cat food and realize you brought it on yourself.

        •  I have a line and the Democratic Party is crossing (4+ / 0-)

it.  Don't give me that "mild cut" b.s.  Durbin wants a commission authorized to cut it every 10 years.

Oh, no.  None of this lesser evil baloney.  And if you want a definition of ASSHOLE, An ASSHOLE is a someone who proposes cutting Social Security benefits.

The Democratic Party is making a choice to abandon it's commitment to Social Security and Medicare.  That is the choice they are making.

And I will make my choice based on their betrayal.

Per Marcos, the stated purpose of this board is to elect more and better Democrats.  Both those adjectives are important:  More and Better.  If the Democrats in office aren't representing us in the ways we want, we need to be finding better Democrats to run in the primaries and work hard to get them elected.

You haven't been here long and every comment I've seen from you is negative, including and especially about Democrats.  I was especially struck by this comment from you:

I will have accomplished punishing the party that betrayed me and betrayed its own legacy.  I believe in getting even.
You want to "get even"?  By voting for Republicans?  Who do you think you'll actually be hurting when you help elect Republicans?  Hint:  it's you and, unfortunately, everyone else, including me.

Instead of having a self-defeating temper tantrum and voting for Republicans, you could invest that energy in helping find those better Democratic candidates or convincing your representatives (if they're Democrats) that they must listen to their constituents (i.e. you).

Your vow to work against Democrats / vote Republican goes against everything DailyKos is about.

            •  Nothing is more self-defeating than voting to (0+ / 0-)

              do yourself harm.

You've seen me post negatively because I am OUTRAGED and I am totally SINGLE ISSUE when it comes to what the Democratic Party is willing to do to SOCIAL SECURITY and MEDICARE.   THIRD RAIL.  Yes, I'm shouting.  And no patronizing comment about temper tantrums has any impact on me because these are serious, core, fundamental issues that go to the reason people choose (and it is a choice) to register as Democrats.  I'm not kidding.  They have totally crossed a line with me.

Markos believes it's all process.  I've seen that pervasively from progressives for the last couple of decades.  It hasn't worked.  We don't control the process.  We're just marks in the game.  We elect more and "better" and more and "better" can't even muster up the effort to have a staffer write a coherent sentence on their position on Social Security or Medicare.  But I do control MY VOTE and I won't give it up for a party that casually cuts Social Security for some sorry process oriented purpose that has nothing to do with my welfare.

And note that I am generally extremely careful never to ask for MORE.  All I am asking is for the Democratic Party to defend its own core programs from cuts.  That's all.   Their unwillingness to do even that is the last straw for me.

If the Democratic Party cannot do that it deserves to lose.  That's what 3rd rail is all about.  At some point, you do something that so outrages your voter that they refuse to vote for your party.

    •  As a Boomer (0+ / 0-)

I am well aware of SS and CPI.

I do not agree with this policy.

But if you think by not voting Dem in 2014 will be giving Dems what they deserve, than you are delusional.

      That is not practical thinking.

By GOTV and getting Dems elected to the House and Senate, will only help.

If Obama had more Dems who believed CPI and other policies are wrong, Obama might be able to do what we want.

I have lived through too many elections where Dems have, for whatever reason, circle their own wagons and shoot.

Personally I am sick and tired of it all. I think considering what he is up against, Obama is doing a good job. Do I like or agree with everything he does? No. But then I always knew when I voted that I would not be getting the president I wanted; that I would not agree with all he or she does.

The fact is: The Republicans have admitted they refuse to work with this man.

He went on the road about gun control and was criticized for campaigning. He backs away so his name isn't linked with an issue and he is criticized for not being involved.

2014 may be the last election with which I get involved. Personally, I think too many voters have become one issue voters and fail to have a vision for the future.

If Dems lose in 2014, the vision for this country is dire. So by not voting, you are not giving the Dems a lesson, you are allowing the nut jobs to control the asylum.

      •  Democrats don't have to do a thing to get my vote (0+ / 0-)

All I am asking is that they DO NOT cut Social Security or Medicare.  That's not exactly a high hurdle.  They can do that in their sleep or on one of their long breaks.
