don't get dictatorial powers. It's not a winner take all system, never has been and pretending it is is near delusional.

What it gets (this time) is 2/3's of the government. With that last third, by design, also involved in governing.

If you want a parliament with prime minister agitate for one openly, don't pretend that's the House, Senate and Presidency are bound by the same rules as one.

and we had a Dem House and GOP everything else, know what I would be for? Letting the GOP have their votes on the House floor for whatever bills they want to propose. That's how you show due deference to the public will as stated in the election. I'd still vote to defeat it, but every vote would get a fair hearing. And on things where there is broad agreement, just move that stuff without drama. The rest we resolve at the ballot box next go round. And until then, full political combat. In the past, this is how minority parties conducted themselves.

But not this GOP. Their idea is shut down the fucking government and ruin the economy and default on the debt if we don't get 100% of what we want. No...that's not normal. That's making a mockery of the system. You can't "shrug shoulders" as you do and say "that's democracy." That's not democracy. Its a perversion of it.

These people have to be politically destroyed not "oh well!"

offer a vote. But that is not the tradition in the House. Hell, when seniority ruled (up until the 80's) Committee Chairmen had the power to keep legislation off the floor and did exactly that. Why do you think Roosevelt had to butter up the Southern Democrats by writing segregation into Social Security? Because they had the seniority and committee chairs to keep it off the floor.

The Republicans are doing nothing that hasn't been done before. It's just more obvious due to the 24 hour news cycle and the lack of pork with which to armtwist (read, bribe) congressmen with.

Sorry, that's just incorrect. Never before have we had a major political party actually use default and bankruptcy of the government is a means to achieve a policy outcome. That is NOT part of the normal back and forth. It just isn't. It is a sign, instead, of a party that has gone off the rails and isn't interested in governing the country for the benefit of its people, no matter how that see it.

Its like I suggest a game of poker and they suggest Russian Roulette. You can't treat these people as normal political actors. They are, if we had some folks with courage on our side, actually enemies of the state. They should be treated like criminals and subversives, not like normal politicians.

      ≠ dictatorial powers

      •  sure, passing bills with a majority (0+ / 0-)

        is democracy.

And, as the Constitution defined it, democracy allows the Senate to say that 41 people can veto the majority. Used to be it took 34.

Our democracy isn't simply majority rule, never has been.
