  •  no... I was at the other end of the world. (8+ / 0-)

Literally. My project is in the Antarctic.  But the prof I'm talking about does work in both polar regions.  :-)

    •  I'm good friends with a guy who has a mountain in (8+ / 0-)

Antarctica named after him.  He was one of the IGY crew back in the '50s.  He's now the Treasurer of the Antarctican Society and writes its newsletter.  Interesting guy, Paul Dalrymple.

As a gauge of how far the scientific community has moved over the last 20 years, my wife and I catered a gathering of retired meteorologists at his house in ME back in the early 90s.  Since we are friends with Paul, we were involved in much of the conversation going on during the evening.  At one point I asked what they all thought about the computer global warming predictions that Jim Hansen had published a few years earlier.  Skepticism was the general consensus.  Paul was noncommittal at that point; he thought that the data were too noisy or something.  Not any more. Here's a comment he emailed me a few weeks ago:

Went to hear my friend Paul Mayewski, Director of the Institute of Climate Change at the Univ of Maine, speak last evening on global warming.  The ocean may well be up to my house by the year 2200
His garage is about 4 feet above the mean high tide mark.  I think he's being a bit too optimistic, yet again.
