  •  They were not handled correctly, for the most part (0+ / 0-)

Transport and handling, as well as the kill, were very badly handled in the US. Granted, it's worse in Mexico, but it generated big money in the US and it was the basis for almost all theft of horses and equine family pets. The rate of horse theft has dropped from hundreds of thousands of dollars per year to almost nothing since the slaughter for human consumption was banned.

And there is a significant difference between slaughter, which is specifically for human consumption, and rendering, or the old fashioned 'glue factory', which handles all livestock already down or dead, or animals who've had antibiotics within a specified number of days. Older, sick, lamed, medicated horses remain as part of the rendering chain of manufacture and products. They still have that way out.

The only things that slaughter facilities do is generate  boatloads of money for foreign owners of the plants and fuel both wholesale theft and irresponsible breeding.
