  •  this is a very good thing (4+ / 0-)

while it is still legal to do so.

    Services I presently get via not-for-profit co-ops:

    electricity
    telephone (land and cell)
    internet
    propane gas
    drinking water
    irrigation water
    banking (CU)
    groceries
Workman's Comp insurance for those who occasionally work with me on construction projects

plus I cooperate a lot with my friends and neighbors...

like you, supporting coops, we'll be making a difference.

One of the things that Mike Beall, the National Business Coop Association guy, said he's going to be working on his increasing awareness. That's sounds good.

Cause either people (like me?) don't know enough about the coops that exist or there are too many gaps with no coops in too many markets...

I'm guessing there's room for a lot more.

that in a lot of western "Red" America,  the Co-op is a part of the culture.  Could be a farmers' co-op, trying to get a better deal than the commodities brokers were offering or could be the Co-op that brought electric power and/or telephone services to rural areas where the shareholders wouldn't be able to make their buck.  We can thank FDR,  Harry Truman and the Democrats of their times (mid-late 1940s) for the legislation that enabled the phone coop that gives me better service out here in the boonies cheaper than you city dwellers pay despite your concentrations of infrastructure.  Same holds true for rural electric power consumers

Cooperation actually is a traditional American Value.  Even if the original cooperative movement came via idealistic Englishmen 150 years ago.

All I really know is that we,  free American Citizens,  are still legally allowed to enter into cooperative economic association with one another without profit being the motive.  We sure as hell better be using that freedom while we still  have it.

this advanced plutocratic, security state of things, if cooperatives and other parallel economy elements were to surge, if "they" wouldn't just swoop in an shut it all down.

Hardly seems like they'd let us take our money elsewhere without a fight.

the Banking Industry tried to get some legislation against Credit Unions,  but failed then in that effort.  They are sure to be back again, especially if enough people actually do "Move Your Money" over to a CU.
