  •  Thanks so much Word In Action. I can't (7+ / 0-)

tell you how much your comment means to me. I'm such a softie...I'm all misty eyed.

I really appreciate your confidence in me and in this endeavor and I promise to continue giving it my all.

PS I have a partner program being worked up now. I plan to approach a few organizations and partner with them to help us both. I'll offer a split of the first month any new subscription fees. This way they can raise money for their cause while helping us find new subscribers. I do like the idea of approaching them for Markos wants to do away with them! :)

    •  As long the (5+ / 0-)

ads (sponsorships!) are coming from the right organizations, readers will mostly find them interesting and/or positive. We like to see "our" interests promoted.

For example, I specifically LOOK at ads in pubs like The Nation.

In fact, The Nation, Mother Jones, The American Prospect,  etc., as well as some of the larger, more successful online progressive websites (e.g., Huffington Post), may also be good sponsor candidates...

You need to recruit a pro bono (or commission-only) sponsorship salesperson. If you're a nonprofit, there are special guidelines you need to follow, as commissions per se are not legal (but there are ways to structure contingent pay that are...).

      Good luck!

From here on out, no one can escape the havoc wrought by the unmitigated Class, Climate and Terror Wars.

definitely look into it. I guess you;re right though. I do look at ads in some places. So yeah, I could see that.

And while we aren't a non-profit I'm not planning to get rich off this. So...

      •  I'll take the other side if that. (3+ / 0-)

Advertising is always wasted space.  I want actionable intelligence.  I literally can't remember the last ad that told me something I didn't already know.

        Information quality is key.

reluctant to put ads in the magazine. And especially with this type of thing, there is going to be SO MUCH information from all over the country. So many states and localities with interesting stuff that we need to know. It seems I might piss off readers with ads to organizations they already know about or causes they're already aware of.

          •  I'm not a fan of ads, (8+ / 0-)

and I am certainly no marketing pro, but I know from years of doing h.s. yearbooks that something as simple as a page that says "THIS PAGE MADE POSSIBLE BY MOTHER JONES MAGAZINE" with a direct link can make a difference. I am that person who will then click on the link and follow. Would I do it for "BRAZILIAN BUTT LIFT"? No, but if I am already reading your content, chances are I want to read MORE content of a similar nature.

Best of luck. When I figure out where I put my debit card, I plan on subscribing...and when school is out, I might send you some articles about the disaster that is Tennessee politics.

            •  Well BUTT LIFT ads would be a different (0+ / 0-)

              constituency for sure. LOLZ

thanks for your input. I'm going to keep all the options open for sure. The primary goal is for the magazine to inform and to provide us with the revenues necessary to keep service costs to candidates ridiculously low so they can run STONG CREDIBLE COMPETITIVE campaigns against our well-oiiled opponents.

              We'll do what we must.

I would definitely prefer an ad-free read, no doubt :-)

to get your primary revenue from 10,000 or 100,000 subscribers than relying on a few big organizations to fuel the effort. Much more stable. And my strong preference.
