  •  New York money? Not likely enough or the answer. (1+ / 0-)

One simple fact; one that seems so damn difficult to get across with traction is that we cannot out raise the very deep pockets of those interests from national to local elections. We've gotten in to a situation that is getting ridiculous where in boxes are filling with desperate fund requests and phony petitions that are just fund raiser schemes.

Many, if not most, voters on our side are strapped already. I'm better off than many, but even I am stretched by increased costs and a desire to help adult offspring and grandchildren as they are strapped by this economy. We are not going to solve this shit by fundraising, better and neater baited hooks to troll increasingly fished out water.

The missed fact is that no amount of money can buy voters that are alert and informed. Money buys soundbites, door hangers, billboards and fliers with propaganda and not one of those is as effective as personal contact and education. We may have reached the Roman bread and circus state in which the baddies with deep pockets have terminally won, but I don't think quite yet.

Don't count on New York money or my Virginia money because it is needed right where it is and the demands are flooding in as it is. Money isn't the only and maybe not even the best answer. Bluntly, if North Carolinians in general, or we Virginians, or New Yorkers are so dull and stupid as to just swallow the big money funded propaganda and vote accordingly, or sit out elections we can win, we deserve what we get. We, as citizens, are responsible for our own fates.

"We, as citizens, are responsible for our own fates."

After all, now that all the gerrymanders went through, it doesn't necessarily matter if a state has more dems than repubs, even if all the dems vote and vote dem.  The odds are that they'll still lose.

despite the sliced and diced "urbanites." The brutal truth is that we "middle class" and aware "lower class" (economically because some "lower" are pretty upper in intellectual development) people cannot compete with the already rigged table against corporations and their beneficiaries. The disposable income of the Koch team can counter the hard earned and barely disposable income of countless number of "us."

Because of our own voter stupidity, and I have some numbers showing that in Virginia, we are in it, there is not much to do about the gerrymandering now.

What we can do is try to mobilize our electors in every statewide vote, office or initiative, to deny the TP/GOP any advance. We can use our personal contacts, e-mail, texting, tweets, whatever and whenever appropriate (introducing politics in some settings may be counterproductive) and face-to-face to counter the cash. We must still contribute, but bluntly, I've about had it with calls from distant states, people I've never heard of, calling for my support with cash that is already stretched caring for mine and races in my backyard. If I had a billion, or a million, or a few hundred thousand just lying around it would be working for political change. I don't and few of us do. We have to find another way to counter the cash from deep pockets on the right, many that have accumulated that cash by raiding the public treasury or lands or contracts.

    •  Money (0+ / 0-)

If you're commenting on my post, I wasn't suggesting that outside money is the answer here in NC.

I was suggesting that in NC, we need resources to counter the massive propaganda machine that is polluting the mind of the average middle of the road voter. Where the resources come doesn't matter so much to me.

I'm also not suggesting that the answer is TV,  radio, print & internet advertising, although all the various means of communication can play a role.

In NC, the John Locke Foundation and other similar right wing "think tanks", fund by Art Pope and the like, are out maneuvering the democrats badly in messaging. If their side of the story is the only one told, that can't be good for our cause. Over the long term, their goal is to dismantle the public education system, making it even easier to control hearts and minds.

If we're going to promote better candidates at all levels, that takes cash, organization and commitment. Art Pope takes care of their cash problem by writing a check and getting his oligarchical buddies to do the same.

We HAVE to respond, and waiting around for the democratic party apparatus to get it done isn't working here.

I would gladly hear productive ideas on how to turn the situation around in NC, as would folks in Wisconsin and Virginia I'm sure.
