(No, this time I'm not being critical of him)

I honestly think Matheson could build up a lot of support and extra votes if he appeared with Democratic state legislature candidates from his district. Think about it, he could build up excitement/trust/interest for elections lower on the ticket, he could basically force the local media to pay attention to the lower level candidates (because they cover any major thing Utah's congressmen do), he could very easily get donations from those who were already going to vote for the legislator candidate, and he could build up name recognition and trust for a potential successor if he ever got sick of running close races in Utah.

That's not even taking into account the fact that anyone who takes the trouble to vote for a Democratic legislator will probably vote for him, or the fact that presenting a unified front will increase the stature of Utah Democrats.

There's no reason why he shouldn't help the down-ticket Dems, because it helps him and the state party (which gives him more money/support to use in his next race, thus allowing him to help the party more, which helps him, and so on). He'd be great for that purpose alone.
