  •  you live in a beautiful area and when I was a (3+ / 0-)

brakeman for CPR in the late 70's for a 6 month period I was stationed there, living in beautiful Victoria.
I also got to see a lot of the island on the rails that are near no roads not just from Victoria but out of Nanaimo to Port Alberni along with a lot of small stops, and also out of Port Hardy (a couple of times).
Beautiful country. One time a friend who had always talked about wanting to ride a train, not the passenger train but on the engine or caboose of a freight train and one day after talking with my conductor and engineer the day before I got him on with us for one day.

He loved it, I could see it in his face as we were coming back over Malahat pass with the engines revved up pushing back on the loads behind us and him seated on the front stool in the engine. His nickname was Silver Dollar Dave and he was also into photography so he brought along his camera equipment and filmed a bit of that trip.
One part he filmed ,unknown to me at the time, was me getting on the engines at the beginning and what made it interesting is that it looked like I was walking into the path of the oncoming engines.
He was filming from behind me as I was fiddling with my overnight bag with it's food and rule books while I walked toward the track never looking up as I approached the track and oncoming engines, then just as the first engine got there I grabbed the rail and hopped on (I'd done this so many times it was automatic).
He said the first people he showed the film to acted apprehensive watching me looking into a briefcase and walking straight towards the track with the engines coming, before I snapped it shut and swung up on the engine at the last moment.

I have a lot of great memories of the area and very happy that my daughter and two grandsons live on the island (Duncan).

    •  Thank you for the story of Vancouver Island (0+ / 0-)

and the E & N train. The Mayor of Victoria wanted a new bridge to replace the blue bridge at the end of Johnson Street. The new bridge will have no tracks for the train so it won't come right into Victoria. But the railway has received funding for upgrading and there are plans to expand it to Langford west of Victoria. I hope when it's restored, you can come and ride it once again.
