'The civil war in Iraq has already begun':
Politician claims conflict has started and warns it will be ‘worse than Syria’

    Patrick Cockburn

    Thursday, 2 May 2013
Iraqi leaders fear that the country is sliding rapidly into a new civil war which “will be worse than Syria”. Baghdad residents are stocking up on rice, vegetables and other foodstuffs in case they are prevented from getting to the shops by fighting or curfews. “It is wrong to say we are getting close to a civil war,” said a senior Iraqi politician. “The civil war has already started.”

This is borne out by the sharp rise in the number of people killed in political violence in Iraq in April, with the UN claiming more than 700 people were killed last month, the highest monthly total for five years.

This ain't no joke. The NY Times did a story, too, a few days previously Clashes in Iraq Carry Worries of a New Civil War and on the same day as Cockburn's article, an op-ed at the NYT Why Maliki Must Go

Fortunately, President Obama has shown reluctance to be drawn deeper into Syria, either by our neo-cons, the Pentagon war-mongers, or Israel. I believe he is sincere about that.

unfortunately. That was always the question, did Iraq make Saddam or Saddam make Iraq. Well, Iraq was that way before Saddam was born.  Lots of good weak people, and a few really ruthless bad apples. One more ruthless bad apple will win, someday.  We should have kept the ruthless bad apple we knew?

then-Senator Joe Biden was arguing that Iraq should be split into three independent nations, matching the 3 Ottoman provinces that existed before the British welded them together into a puppet oil state.

    •  Joe Biden (4+ / 0-)

Rather prescient on this around 2006-7 when he proposed a three-state solution I'd say.  And yet all he gets is to be a punchline.

      •  Biden was echoing the neo-Con's dream, (5+ / 0-)

after it was obvious the "path of flowers" conquest and occupation wasn't going to work.

And you can just bet the Turks will be thrilled with an independent Kurdistan on their borders. As will be Iran.

The 3-state solution is just a formula for wider war. But it looks like we're going to get that one way or the other.

    •  Senator Biden once suggested a 3 state solution (0+ / 0-)

      ...for Iraq.

I firmly believe that, just as we have more nation states today than 20 years ago, in another 20 years, we'll have far more nation states than we do today.

Yet, we have misguided EuroCrats in Brussels who are determined to force a United States of Europe upon a unwilling populace, sacrifying democracy in the process.
