A country of 5 or 6 million, surrounded by a few hundred million in countries where many would like to see them disappear. They don't have a lot of options.

the "poor plucky little underdog surrounded by enemies" bit.

      Maybe if it was 1967.

Today they're practically a superpower in their own right.

Not to mention having the world's largest superpower at their beck and call.

If the pilot's good, see, I mean if he's reeeally sharp, he can barrel that baby in so low... oh you oughta see it sometime. It's a sight. A big plane like a '52... varrrooom! Its jet exhaust... frying chickens in the barnyard!

IMO many of Israel's actions, including this as well as their insistence that Iran is a threat, can best be seen in light of their wanting to remain the only nuclear power in the Middle East, and as such the only country having essentially complete freedom of action.

This is why they feel so threatened by the economic success of Turkey, and the (at this point really quite likely purely peaceful) nuclear program in Iran.
