  •  Hey - A National Day of Prayer - that's (6+ / 0-)

disgusting; we're supposed to have a secular government, not one that panders to preachers & their flocks.

That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --

It's not an official holiday; there are no real governmental observances; the President issues a proclamation and some Congressmen do their thing.

Our government officials of faith don't turn in their beliefs when they get elected. Let 'em express their faith (or lack thereof!) same as the rest of us.

O'course, should they start dissin' the rest of us....

We have just enough religion to make us hate, but not enough to make us love one another. -- Jonathan Swift

      •  it is an official "observance" in 36 USC though (6+ / 0-)

"The President shall issue each year a proclamation designating the first Thursday in May as a National Day of Prayer"

Whether or not the president is of faith he's still legally required to make the proclamation.

hte government is encouraging prayer, giving it its blessing so to speak. There is no national day of scentific, logical or empirical thought.  Hell, they don't even give equal time to other superstitious behavior - no "study your horoscope" or "read your tarot" day, etc.
