    I am no scholar in this area.

    But is it that Lucifer is related to Prometheus?

    And the Greek religion punishes Prometheus for giving humans fire and all that brings.

    But the Thumper religion simply calls Lucifer "the Debbil" and discounts all that Lucifer really stands for?

    I have no idea, but invite comments!

      I hadn't made that connection before, but now that you bring it up, it makes sense.

      You can't keep a mighty tree alive (much less expect it to thrive) by only spritzing the fine leaves at its tippy-top. The fate of the whole tree depends on nurturing the grassroots. - Jim Hightower

        taught a combination of Greek religion and Christianity, in which Prometheus was the hero who rebelled against the tyrant Gods and gave humanity what it needed, while Lucifer brought the false light of reason, thinking for yourself, distinguishing good and evil, and so on.

        It seemed to me to be exactly the sort of Cognitive Dissonance required in those who were going to go out as simultaneous defenders of English liberties and masters of Empire.
