but I do not believe that religion has ever made a parent more loving toward their child.

Religion can make some people more charitable or cause them to do good deeds that they would not do otherwise.  But when it comes to children, a parents natural instinct is to love and protect them.

Religion can actually cause parents to override their natural instincts about what it is best for their kids.  Some examples would be: Blind trust toward religious figures who may harm their children; Foregoing science and modern medicine;  And pressuring their children not to follow the path that is most likely to lead to their self-fulfillment.

The following is an over generalization, but it contains a lot of truth: "With or without faith, good people will do good things and evil people will do evil things.  But it is faith alone that can cause a good person to do evil."

That faith alone causes good people to do evil. Money and power are very strong drivers in that regard, and are often the actual cause of evil acts that some people try to excuse with a cloak of religion.

but the point is that while people can be motivated by the love of money and power on some level they know that is "evil" or "sinful."

But even a genuinely good person with no selfishness within him whatsoever, who cares not a bit for power or money, can still be compelled to commit an absolutely unspeakable act if he believes that god requires it.

There is not one morality lesson in the Bible that a modern rational society could not come up with on their own.  Yet the Bible has held civilization back when it comes to equality, slavery, and sexual violence.
