Is some thing that is required if you live in a community. It sickens me that the rich just dont have to be responsible to others because they are rich. That is for all those little guys ,the powerless the peons......

the regulations that had made them responsible.

      •  It's devolved to the local level (5+ / 0-)

You're right that at the national and state level, those regulations have largely been dismantled.

However, I can virtually guarantee you that the situation in West, TX would not have been allowed in the relatively upscale suburb of Dallas that I live in.  City zoning can and would have prevented a dangerous industrial facility from being next to residential areas.  In another nearby upscale suburb, a lead smelter that had been around since the place was a small town of a couple thousand people was forced to close down by the city.

So what's the difference?  The resources of a fairly large city with a strong tax base -- and voters who won't put up with that crap in their own back yard.

They will, however, vote these deregulatory assholes in at the state level, content in the knowledge that our city governments will protect our own back yards.

Yeah, a bit of hypocrisy there -- deregulation for thee, but not for me, or something like that.

... by the "Sensible Moderates" that there were so many levels of regulation that surely "removing just one" wouldn't hurt.

Except several efforts at "removing just one" were launched and executed at pretty much the same time.
